I'll start with 3 reservations about this book, which I would probably rate at 4.5 stars if that was an option : Firstly, it would be nice to see more detailed maps....the single map which attempts to show all Africa's "river regions" is woefully inadequate. Secondly I'd like to see field photographs which put the art and peoples of Africa's rivers into context. Thirdly, apart from the excellent item descriptions, there is hardly any text. On the other hand...The good news is that 5 Continents does their usual excellent job in quality presentation, binding, paper, and photography.....and the even better news is that the items selected are consistently first rate. The main sections of the book are (1) Congo (Musonge, Luba, Ubangi, Umaniema, Ukongo, Ukwango). (2) Gabon (Ogooue, Ngoume) (3) Cameroon (Grasslands) (4) Nigeria (Oyo - Chamba) and (5) Western Africa (Bamana, Bandema). Features figures (power figures, fetish figures, nkisi nail figures, reliquary figures), staffs, stools, containers, and masks.
Despite my reservatrions, the striking beauty of the items selected tips the scale betweeen 4 and 5 stars on the 5-star side.
