Depuis le Moyen Âge, le sous-sol a été exploité pour en extraire le calcaire et le gypse nécessaires à la construction de Paris. Il reste des anciennes carrières près de 300 kilomètres de galeries soigneusement consolidées, essentiellement rive gauche. D'autres toiles souterraines, à commencer par celles des égouts et du métro, s'ajoutent à ce réseau pour composer avec les circuits de distribution du gaz, de l'électricité, du téléphone… une doublure secrète de la capitale.

The ground beneath Paris has been quarried for limestone and gypsum since the Middle Ages. What remains of the old quarries is over 300 kilometers of carefully reinforced galleries, most of which are on the Left Bank. Other subterranean mazes, such as the sewers and the metro system, should be counted along with them, as should the circuits for utilities such as gas, electricity, and telephone service.
